Freelancers vs. Agency: How to Choose
The real question:
"Do I need thinking, or do I need volume?"
If you have a clear vision and need someone to execute, a freelancer or subscription is the rational choice. Don't pay senior rates for production.
If you need someone to figure out your positioning, design a system around it, then apply it consistently — you need strategic help. That's a fractional creative director or an design partner.
If you've got fifteen stakeholders, three regions, and a legal team — that's genuinely agency territory. A solo operator can't and shouldn't run that.
Most small businesses think they need an agency because "agency" sounds safe. What they actually need is one senior person who owns the outcome.
What "fractional" actually means
You've probably heard "fractional CFO" or "fractional CMO" — senior executives companies bring on part-time, as needed, instead of paying a full salary for a seat they can't fill full-time. Same idea.
A fractional creative director is the senior person who'd lead your project at an agency — except you hire them directly, at the fraction you actually need. You get the strategy and the craft from one experienced person, without the account managers, the office, the margin, or the handoffs.
Agency often doesn't add up for startups and smaller brands
An in-house senior designer, fully loaded, runs roughly $120k/year. That's full-time "fractional" engagements. Unless you need constant, high-volume creative, the in-house and big-agency math rarely wins for a small company.
Agencies also carry a quieter cost: handoffs. The senior creative who charmed you in the pitch is often not the person doing your work. You brief an account manager, who briefs a designer, who briefs a junior. Signal degrades at every handoff. When you hire a fractional CD, the person you hired is the person doing the work.
What Monument is (so you can rule me in or out)
I work as a fractional creative director. Your senior person (me) handling brand identity, web design, packaging, and pitch decks, direct with you, no account-manager-junior-designer telephone game.
Flat rates, regular video updates, retainers when it makes sense. I'm the right call for startups and small businesses that want strategic, senior work without agency overhead. And, as someone with in-house agency experience, I'll tell you honestly if your project actually needs an agency instead.
